With fans still reeling from Bethesda’s Fallout 76 announcement, the rumor that Fallout: New Vegas writer Chris Avellone is involved in the project has been shot down. Some were left disappointed that the next game won’t be a long-awaited Fallout: New Vegas 2, but the bad news kept coming as it’s confirmed the game’s writer also isn’t involved in Fallout 76 at all.
No one really knows what is going on with Fallout 76 at the moment, leaving fans and gaming experts in the dark as to what Bethesda has up its sleeve next. Beating anticipated titles like a remaster of Fallout 3 to celebrate its 20th anniversary or some sort of New Vegas sequel, Bethesda surprised gamers with Fallout 76’s reveal, which is meant to be a different type of game.
Bethesda Softworks will fully unveil Fallout 76 during their E3 showcase next weekend, but until then, there are plenty of rumors to keep fans talking. One prominent rumor is that Chris Avellone, who has worked on Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, will be writing Fallout 76’s script. Unfortunately, that’s simply not true. Avellone refuted the rumor himself on Twitter. Take a look:
There is a glimmer of hope that Avellone is trolling his fans, but if that were the case, he probably would’ve ignored the question altogether. As for where the rumors started they stemmed from an apparent “insider” leak on Reddit which specifically named Avellone. Now that this news has been debunked, the leak appears to be from a questionable source.
Avellone clearly has a talent when it comes to writing gripping video game storylines, with Fallout: New Vegas being a huge hit for the franchise. Diverting from the apocalyptic wasteland that players had come to know since Fallout first hit PCs back in 1997, New Vegas followed a new lead, a brand new location, and a host of colorful characters on the New Vegas strip. It is still a beloved entry to the series and gamers are constantly asking if it will ever get an official sequel rather than just some fan-made mods.
While Avellone may be sitting this one out, New Vegas developers Obsidian shared their disappointment in Bethesda choosing not to move forward with a proper sequel in their series. That being said, the company has expressed an interest in crafting another Fallout game, so Avellone could return to the RPG series somewhere down the line. No one knows what the future may hold, but Bethesda needs to bring Chris Avellone back to the franchise, if only for the nostalgia factor alone. As for Fallout 76, E3 promises to be one to watch as Bethesda hypes this year’s expo as its biggest yet. One thing’s for sure, though, no matter who is writing the script, players can’t wait to stick on their jumpsuits and head down into the vaults once again.
